Family Friendly
Short, adventurous trail that is entertaining for kids.
Need to Know
Be aware that the elevation profile for this trail, as well as many trails in Shades and Turkey Run State Parks, is very inaccurate due to the small, deep ravines many of the trails pass through. These ravines typically do not show up well on terrain maps.
Trail may be impassible during periods of high water.
Description
Trail begins at the northwestern corner of Hickory Parking lot. The trail runs perpendicular away from the parking lot, and
Trail 7 branches to the left. The first half of this trail is relatively easy, navigating the top of a ridge in a deciduous grove. The trail will gradually move downward until meeting a large rock beach at Sugar Creek.
Take the first right you come across and head back towards the parking lot. (If you continue straight, you'll intersect
Trail 5.) You are now entering Frisz Ravine. This rugged valley features small waterfalls, boulders, small caves, and two ladders to climb. This is the difficult portion of the trail, and dogs are not recommended. Eventually you'll exit the ravine and meet the
Trail 1 Ridgetop Connector, which you can use to access the parking lot,
Trail 5, and
Trail 1.
Flora & Fauna
Beech, oak, tulip trees.
