Need to Know
There are no fees for parking, camping or hiking in this canyon. There are also no restrooms or services of any type. Cell service is intermittent, at the bottom, but good at the top.
Description
The parking area is the end of the Mack's Canyon Road, at the "Open Campground." Continue southwest on foot, following the washed-out remains of the road. Where we turned on the way up worked, but it was not the most common place to turn. If you turn there, you'll go up quite a bit before you hit your first cairn.
Once you reach your first cairn, you'll be able to follow the faint trail west, toward the peak, which is visible at this point. It's deceptively close, but a very steep, loose climb awaits you when you reach the base of the peak. From where you are now, you can see a line of trees ascending from right to left up the face of the peak. That's your route!
Flora & Fauna
Ponderosa, bristlecone, and white/Austrian pines, some juniper, high desert scrub. A few birds, a lot of chipmunks, some brittle brush, assorted desert scrub.
