Starting out at 15,000 feet means the air is thin for the entirety of this hike. From the trailhead, you'll find numerous local peoples with horses. They'll happily take you up to the mountain on a horse for a small fee.

Stay to the trail on the right as the one on the left is used by the horses. There are several toilets on the way up for a fee. There're also numerous people selling snacks and refreshments.

Continue up the gentle and gradual trail. Eventually, you'll hit a steeper section that will take you up to the saddle. Turn left at the saddle as you are not permitted to turn right and actually summit on Rainbow Mountain. At the top of the peak, turn around for an amazing view of Rainbow Mountain.

Descend back down through the saddle and stay left to continue over to Red Mountain. The trail is easy but narrow so be careful not to slip. Top out on Red Mountain with amazing views of the Red Valley. Then follow the trail back down through switchbacks. This trail eventually connects up to the main trail back to the trailhead.
