Need to Know
High clearance vehicle needed to get to top near trailhead!
Description
The roads to the trailhead are not marked out very well, so be sure to get a cached satellite image on your phone before heading up. Maps might be out of date with new roads being built all the time. The road ends at the old lookout tour location, is very, very steep and rocky, and has huge kelly ditches -- you'll need high clearance or an ATV, but there's plenty of parking at the top and also a convenient squat toilet.
The trailhead is clearly seen from the parking area; just start hiking up. It's a great trail with tons of spots for some backpacking opportunities and tons of views! Once at the saddle, you can either enjoy the view of Chimney Rock, or go right or left to summit either peak. Be sure to look to the south for views of Hunt Lake with Gunsight Peak, Lake Pend Oreille in the distance, and also Mount Spokane on clear days. Be sure to look west for views of Priest Lake and Luby Bay and north for the endless view of the Selkirks heading into Canada. Be extremely careful on the rock boulders as you climb around!
Flora & Fauna
Avalanche lily and tiger lily.
