Need to Know
The Elferhutte has good food but it only takes cash. Be prepared.
Description
Take the Elferbahn (gondola) to the upper station. Enjoy watching the paragliders taking off and then start the loop by following the Panoramaweg/Zwolfer signposts.
The trail goes steadily uphill for the first few miles but the views are amazing and the trail is dotted with fun exhibits about various topics. There are a few trail junctions, but basically keep heading towards Zwolfer and curving around behind the Elfer Peak (which will be on your right).
The section in the rocks up on the Elfer gets pretty tricky at spots—you'll be scrambling up or down as the case may be—but it's very cool terrain and the views keep getting better. You can take a short spur at the top to go to the very top of the Elfer but it's pretty technical; you'll probably want protection. Take your time at the top and be safe.
The way down is steep but beautiful. As an added bonus, you can see the Elferhutte most of the way, so you'll be motivated by the fine Austrian food and beer that awaits.
After taking a break at the Elferhutte, head down 20 minutes and take the Elferbahn back to the valley.
The day we followed the trail, we saw maybe 20-30 other people over four hours. You should have plenty of quiet and privacy.
Flora & Fauna
Lots of wildflowers. Occasional cows and sheep.
