Overview
The Androscoggin Valley is bounded by the larger peaks. This is a smaller peak, lower and closer to the river. It's a great day hike for small kids or a nice time-trial for visiting ultrarunners. The fastest known time for the ascent is 13:26. Go to it!
Description
From the trailhead along
Shelburne's North Road, hike an easy 0.3 miles along the
Austin Mill Brook Road to the junction with the
Yellow Trail. From here, your warm-up is over! The trail climbs through pine and beech forest getting increasingly steep with roots and rocks until you emerge on the summit ledges. Views of
Shelburne, the Androscoggin Valley, and northern Presidentials greet you.
This is a great time-trial for those who think they've got pretty good mountain hiking skills, or an even better challenging hike for children from ages 2-10. The views at the top are a great reward. About 0.1 miles past the junction on the
Yellow Trail is a set of huge boulders which are very fun to explore.
Flora & Fauna
Lichen and ferns abound.
