Description

This hike takes you along the Ogden Mountain Trail, which meanders over a semi-open ridgeline and into thick stands of lodgepole pines. Sweeping mountain and valley views can be seen from several points along the trail, and lynx are known to frequent the area, so be on the lookout for any signs of tracks, particularly in the early spring when snow still covers the ground. The trail ends in an open meadow, with plenty of space for picnics and backcountry camping, and connects with an old mining road. Hikers can either head back along the trail from here to complete the day, or continue onwards along the road to the second trail of the hike. Heading south on this road for about a half of a mile brings visitors to the start of the Sauerkraut Trail, which descends a narrow valley through cool, thickly-forested terrain.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS: From Lincoln take MT-200 to Dalton Mountain Road, approximately 3 miles. Turn left and follow the road for approximately 8 miles, until a sign on the righthand side of the road that points towards Trail 404. Turn right onto the dirt road just beyond the sign, and drive to the end, where the trailhead begins. This side road is heavily rutted, so low-clearance cars should park on the shoulder of the main road instead
