Description

The Hawthron Trail displays diverse geology different from other areas in the park. Access this trail from the Equestrian Trail. Continuing past the intersection, the path follows the side of a narrow ridge and returns on the southwest side. Note the differences in plants found on the two sides of the ridge. The prevailing hot and dry, southwest winds give a glade-like appearance along the face of the ridge. Here, the soil is dryer, plants are more sparse, and areas of underlying rock is exposed. Glade restoration in this area has been in progress in recent years. On the northeast side, notice that plants are thicker/greener, the soil is deeper, and pawpaw trees can be found on the slope and in the valley.
