Need to Know
No parking fee or restroom service at this spot. It is about a 1000 ft climb in just over a mile. The Hellgate wind can whip along this ridgeline, and it has very few shaded areas. Bring water in the summer or plan an early morning/later evening trip. Dress warm in the winter if the wind is blowing.
Description
Named after the late David Pengelly, a local Missoula attorney, avid outdoors man, and climber that passed away in a climbing accident in 2003, this trail is a local favorite. Climbable year round, it is a popular hiking, running, and skiing destination. The Pengelly stone commemorating the spirit of Dave sits at the top along with some incredible views of the Missoula valley. At the end of the trail lies a connector trail that allows you to summit Mt. Sentinel or access Pattee Canyon.
Flora & Fauna
Deer, wildflowers, birds. Could see bear, mountain lion, or moose, but highly unlikely since it's a well traveled trail.
