Description
Sawtooth Ridge Trail 1403 (not to be confused with Sawtooth Mountain
Trail #36 near Lake Timpanogas) is a good, long-ish connection between
Hardesty Trail #3469 and
Lost Creek Trail #3462. This route allows access to Eagle's Rest and Goodman Creek trails leading down to Hardesty Portal.
Sawtooth is best accessed from the
Hardesty Trail #3469. Hike up the steep climb toward
Hardesty Trail #3469, staying left at the first trail intersection to keep on the Hardesty Cut-off Trail (avoids climbing to the summit). In the middle of a long traverse on a steep side slope, turn left by way of a steep switchback onto the Sawtooth Trail.
This trail descends briefly and then traverses on rugged terrain before reaching Sawtooth Ridge. The ridge section climbs and descends steeply a few times before opening into a large sloped meadow with good views to the south of the Umpqua National Forest and June Mountain. After re-entering the woods, descend through old growth to the intersection with
Mount June Trail #1400.
From here, a short hike leads to the top of June Mountain. At the three-way intersection of Sawtooth and Mount June (1400) trails, the trail leading west is now called
Lost Creek Trail #3462. Follow this trail for 2.5 miles to the paved FS Road 511. You can hike FS Road 511 for two easy miles westward to pick up the
Eagles Rest Trail #3461.
