Description
The Backbone Trail will allow hikers to climb to the highest point of elevation within Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park; second highest if you count the parking lot! The Backbone Trail is made up of a ridge, better known as an escarpment, created by the erosion of the surrounding sedimentary rock from the Duck River.
The Backbone Trail will begin with an abrupt uphill climb (change in elevation is approximately 600-700 ft.). There are many large roots and limestone outcrops to grab/anchor onto in order to maintain some grip, if necessary. Once on top of this escarpment (a.k.a. the backbone) the trail will level out and provide hiker with a view of Little Duck River, "Big" Duck River, and the surrounding flora & fauna. The downhill portion (either side) is relatively steep so be careful of sliding, tripping, or falling on the descent.
Once hikers are off of the escarpment, the trail will meander slightly towards Little Duck River. It is here that hiker can observe a beautiful, small waterfall (typically only present following heavy rainfall in the area) where Grindstone Hollow Creek flows into Little Duck River. The trail will then take hikers along a very narrow, rocky path alongside Little Duck River. The Backbone Trail consists of approximately 1.50 miles and will terminate at the
Forks of the River Trail.
