Overview
Outstanding views, just off AZ Hwy 260 with a plethora of well-maintained trails to chose from. Depicted route is Poll Knoll Trail to Red Trail to Osprey Trail to Summit Trail and then the Viewpoint Spur.
Need to Know
Two excellent parking areas to choose from just off the highway, with maps of the trail system available at kiosks and at least one vault toilet in the parking area.
Description
Poll Knoll is a trail system maintained by Apache-Sitgreaves USFS consisting of miles of mostly doubletrack through ponderosa, aspen, fir and spruce-lined forest. It is a four season destination and an excellent spot in the winter for snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Elevation gains are moderate, but base elevations up here are high (>8000 ft) so oxygen is a premium.
Trail difficulty is really intermediate for most trails and the one outlined here but upgrade rating based on altitude. Summer and fall have excellent mountain biking but monsoon afternoon thunderstorms are common early July through late September, so arrive before 11 AM or late in the day during that season.
