Description
Starting from the
Indian Pass Trail: there is a signpost right where this trail should lead off of the
Indian Pass Trail that will not mention Mt Marshall or point in the direction of this trail, which is marked by a cairn that is slightly hidden on the opposite side of the trail from the signpost. This is the beginning of the Cold Brook Trail.
It ascends gradually at first, becoming steeper as it makes its way up a narrow gorge, crossing the river several times. This path is not marked or maintained, so be sure you have sharpened your route-finding skills--they will be needed.
There are many downed trees, even when the trail leaves the gorge, and it is very overgrown in general.
Just before the height-of-land, there is a cairn and a spur trail on the right that lead up Mt Marshall. This spur trail has the same conditions as the Cold Brook Trail.
Past the height-of-land, a few tenths of a mile beyond the spur trail, is the wreck of a Piper from 1969. It can be seen from the trail, but there is also an obvious path to it. The solo pilot survived and walked back to safety.
Down towards Lake Colden is very steep in places, with large rocks and areas of standing water.
