From the main gate, you hike down to the Siq (the narrow canyon leading to the Treasury). The path starts out as dirt and once you enter the Siq, it's a combination of dirt and the original cobblestone path. On the way to the Basin restaurant, the trail is all downhill and flat. It is quite a long walk with no shade though. When you reach the Treasury, continue right and keep walking past the Royal Tombs, the old marketplace, and eventually you'll reach the Basin Restaurant. If you continue past it, you'll reach the trail for the monastery... a difficult hike consisting of 150+ steep and uneven stairs.
