Need to Know
Please note that part of this trail crosses the Hudson Farm Commercial Hunting Preserve which allows year-round hunting. Please wear bright colors and stay on the trail.
Additionally, the northern end passes near Weldon Quarry which blasts rock on weekdays. There is, of course, no danger, but don't be surprised at an unexpected bang or two.
Description
This is the first completed segment of a planned 40 mile route around Lake Hopatcong. This section begins on the Morris Canal Towpath across from Hopatcong State Park in Landing. It winds through Hopatcong Borough, with several spurs to access the trail, all the way to the Prospect Point Preserve in Jefferson.
A large section of this trail follows the path of
The Highlands Trail - NJ Section, and this is the most engaging component. The initial section through Hopatcong has a few portions of trail on a 2-lane road and very wide doubletrack, but once out of this area, the trail is quite serene, even though you are in sight of roadways in many locations.
Highlights of this trail include multiple stream crossings, a lovely swamp, and occasional patches of rhododendron bushes. There are no interesting vistas, but if you enjoy a stroll through quiet woods, then this trail is for you.
Flora & Fauna
Typical northern NJ hardwood forest with sections of rhododendron and swampland. Deer and Bear frequent the area too.
