Overview
Heublein Tower is a prominent and popular destination in central Connecticut. The most popular route is from the parking area at Talcott Mt. State Park on Rt 185. This hike is longer but less crowded. Bring a picnic, as there are tables at the top and the tower is open in season.
Description
Park at Reservoir 6 lot on Rt 44. Follow the
Metacomet Trail along Reservoir Road to the north side of the reservoir. The
Metacomet Trail leaves the road and goes up the hill into the woods. The trail follows old woods roads and climbs gradually.
The trail crosses a power line and soon comes to the paved access road to the tower. Follow the blue-blazed trail to the cliff outlook or take the road directly to the tower and picnic area.
Once you have enjoyed the views and your picnic, simply return to the trailhead via the way you came.
History & Background
Gilbert Heublein made A-1 steak sauce and Smirnoff vodka. He built the tower as a castle for his fiancé. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
