Need to Know
Because this trail is exposed, it can get hot on a warm summer day, so sunscreen is essential if you are sensitive. Ticks can also be a minor concern here due to the close proximity to high grass. The trail can get muddy following heavy rains.
Description
From the trailhead along A-Frame Road, the trail immediately starts descending through forest. After about 0.75 miles, the trail emerges into the main part of the valley, and from here on, you are mostly in open or sparsely wooded landscape. Cross Glade Run and the Little Blackwater River. To the north stands one of the oldest populations of the endemic Canaan fir tree, a variant of balsam fir (i.e. the stereotypical Christmas tree).
After a mile, the trail bends sharply south and continues down the middle of the upper part of Canaan Valley until you reach Lakeview Road at 4.5 miles. Enjoy expansive views of Canaan Valley on this little-used trail—even on the best fall days, expect to see, at maximum, only a few other people. This a fantastic trail for winter hiking if the snow isn't too deep.
