Overview
An adventurous hike which starts from a remote monastery and ends with a remarkable mountain top view.
Need to Know
After reaching Montserrat Monastery, there is a small market and restaurant you can pick up extra water/food or locally produced sweets.
Description
The Montserrat Monastery is a 1.5 hour car or train ride from Barcelona. The monastery can be best accessed via cable car (Aeri de montserrat station) or rack railway (Monistrol de montserrat station). The cable car views are breathtaking and worth the extra few euros.
Find the trailhead map located on the west side of Montserrat Monastery marking the start of the trail. The path upwards is well traveled and well marked, but requires good endurance. A set of hiking poles are very helpful if carrying a pack. As you travel up the steps, you hike through forest, which eventually opens up to towering stone peaks in the distance. If visibility is good, rock climbers can often be seen here.
Continue up the switchbacks and admire the view behind you when you stop to rest. The top of Sant Jeroni offers a great observation point of a village in the distance and a sheer drop off. Be careful, it can be windy up there!
Flora & Fauna
Wild rosemary grows alongside the trail here along the first couple miles.
