Overview
This is a easy to moderate hike. The way up the mountain is an easy climb, though once you reach the caves, it gets challenging. Nevertheless, it’s worth the effort.
Starting at the Visitor Center and parking lot, hike towards the caves on
Sam's Point Road Loop. When you reach the junction with the
Ice Caves Road, follow that road down to the
Ice Caves Trail. The
Ice Caves Trail is a loop trail, so you'll end up back at the
Ice Caves Road no matter which direction you hike.
Description
From the Visitor Center, start out on the trail to the right where there is a footpath (an old carriage way,
Sam's Point Road Loop) taking you up the hill. It’s a easy to moderate hike up the mountain. After around a half mile, you'll come to a junction where you can turn left to head to the Sam's Point Overlook, or continue going straight towards the Ice Caves. I first turned left going towards the Sam’s Point Overlook. I wanted to have a view from that vantage point as the views are breathtaking.
Once on your way from Sam's Point towards the caves on
Ice Caves Road, the carriage way flats out. After hiking on this old road for another half mile, you'll again get to another junction with the
Ice Caves Trail. Turn right to head towards the caves. After 500 feet, continue straight if you want to go towards the caves, or follow the trail to the left towards the falls. The caves are rugged, rocky, and wet.
Make sure to wear proper footwear. A hiking stick or poles are recommended.
