Need to Know

There is plenty of parking at the bottom by the ski area and in town. At times during the summer, FR 485 is heavily used by OHV and ATV riders.

The Smokehouse restaurant is right at the bottom, this place has amazing Texas style BBQ + beer and wine.

Description

Much of the route follows Forest Road 485 as it climbs from the Red River ski area. Along the first two miles, look for a narrow singletrack winding through the trees and crossing the road in a few places with a few short, steep sections. Watch for vehicles on the road and some hand-built bridges across the stream.

Look for wild raspberries during August, and watch out for stinging nettles which are abundant in this area during summer. Remnants of old mines can be found along the way, and the trail tops out at a mine alongside the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness boundary.
