Description

This heavily wooded trail features Deer Run Loop. Beginning on the Deer Run Loop, the trail makes a low water crossing before climbing a steep incline. The hillside, covered with oak and hickory trees, is a favorite roosting site for turkey vultures.

As the trail starts to level out, hikers will come to a white connector trail (WC2) that will reduce the hike to about one mile. Hikers choosing to stay on the Deer Run Loop through the rolling wooded hills will see deep ravines and several footbridges before reaching the southern boundary of the park. This area has younger trees and a more open feel because it was once farmland.

Along the trail, hikers will come to two old farm ponds. At the second pond, hikers may choose to continue on the Deer Run Loop or take the Deer Creek Trail through more scenic bottomland area. The Deer Creek Trail follows the steep banks of this meandering creek. Hikers can expect to see small sand bars, small fish and amphibians, woodland birds, and numerous deer tracks before rejoining Deer Run Trail. The trail continues along a ridge in the woods providing wildlife viewing opportunities as it meanders its way back to Lake Allaman.
