There's a small loop that goes up and around a wildflower area with butterflies.
Need to Know
There are no views, waterfalls, or much else that makes the trail exciting. Because of this, it may be a bit more tedious than even the other local, more technical hikes. There is a road crossing at mile 1.2 and a rail road crossing at mile 1.5. The trail seems to be more suitable for biking. If you bring a dog, the gravel can be rough on their paws.
Description
This is a multi-use trail of crushed stone, boardwalk and sidewalk that is open to hikers and bikers and is ADA compliant. The trailhead provides several amenities: parking for 30 vehicles, restrooms, a picnic shelter, picnic tables, bathroom facilities and water fountains.
The
Carolina Thread Trail starts in the downtown of Kings Mountain, runs through the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail parking lot, on to the entrance of the Rail Trail at the Gateway and then turns right onto the loop trail then right again onto the Foote Trail that heads south to I-85 and on past to Galilee Church Road. The new section of trail on the south side of I-85 is great for flat surface hiking and biking.
The trailhead and trail is clearly marked. The
Carolina Thread Trail splits off twice—both to the right—from the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail loops. After the first half mile, the trail converts into a compacted gravel trail for the remaining 4.5 miles. From this point, you'll pass the open (but fenced off) mining pit, pine trees covered in kudzu vine and the backside of the local drive in theater. The entire trail is clearly marked and it will be difficult to stray. Just past the second mile, the trail begins to run parallel to I-85 before eventually crossing it via a private bridge at mile three. The trail is easier going as most of the travel is downhill. The return trip can be more laborious.
