From Boyana, enter the national park and briefly follow the trail to Boyana Waterfall; the trail to Boyana Lake turns off after about 50 meters and is well marked. The first 300 meters are remarkable given the surrounding terrain. Then you reach a series of switchbacks; here there are lots of short cuts to be more direct, but I always try to stay on the trail.The trail continues to climb, and you cross number of streams and creeks that can easily overflow after rains.
