Overview
The Elk Mountain summit has a rewarding, breathtaking panoramic view of Grand County in all directions.
Need to Know
Getting there: 2 miles east of Parshall, take State Road 21 for 14.0 miles; it’s very well-maintained for low-clearance cars. Park on the shoulder and begin the trail starting up the old jeep road.
Description
The trail surface is an ATV/4x4 accessible road. There are minimal fallen tree obstacles on the trail, and several stream crossings along the way.
This is a seldom-used trail. Biking is possible for the first leg on the multi-use
Corral Peak #112.6. It is strictly hiking only upon turning NE headed toward the mountain summit (35% grade) on the
Elk Mountain Trail #111.1.
There are breathtaking view of Grand County at the top above the tree line. Bring a windbreaker as there are cold, choppy winds at the mountain’s peak, dropping the air temperature by 20° on a warm summer day. And somebody, please find my dropped sunglasses!
Flora & Fauna
Many wildflowers. Vultures circling overhead at peak for various dying/dead elk; bones scattered about.
