Overview

The Elk Mountain summit has a rewarding, breathtaking panoramic view of Grand County in all directions.

Need to Know

Getting there: 2 miles east of Parshall, take State Road 21 for 14.0 miles; it’s very well-maintained for low-clearance cars. Park on the shoulder and begin the trail starting up the old jeep road.

Description

The trail surface is an ATV/4x4 accessible road. There are minimal fallen tree obstacles on the trail, and several stream crossings along the way.

This is a seldom-used trail. Biking is possible for the first leg on the multi-use Corral Peak #112.6. It is strictly hiking only upon turning NE headed toward the mountain summit (35% grade) on the Elk Mountain Trail #111.1.

There are breathtaking view of Grand County at the top above the tree line. Bring a windbreaker as there are cold, choppy winds at the mountain’s peak, dropping the air temperature by 20° on a warm summer day. And somebody, please find my dropped sunglasses!

Flora & Fauna

Many wildflowers. Vultures circling overhead at peak for various dying/dead elk; bones scattered about.

Took 125 and then 6.8 miles down forest road 112 (well past the large Elk mountain trailhead sign). Long steady rise to the top.

Beautiful views, last mile or so was the hardest and a little hard to find the trail. Look for the ATV tracks in the second clearing to get to the top
