Need to Know
This trail is multi-directional and multi-use, so either hikers, runners, or other mountain bikers may be on the trail traveling in the uphill direction.
Description
Scorpion trail is named after the Red Rock High School's mascot. Most commonly, the trail starts from the high school and heads in the downhill direction (north to south). The trail is mostly intermediate rated but there are numerous embedded basalt rocks in the trail.
About halfway along, the trail comes to an intersection with a newly adopted trail called
Pyramid. For advanced hikers heading downhill, you might want to take the
Pyramid optional trail to the end of the Scorpion trail.
Pyramid trail gives the advanced hiker a 1.2-mile mostly downhill extension with some fairly rugged descending sections and ledgy climb sections. Otherwise, continue descending Scorpion.
At the end of the trail, you'll see the end of
Pyramid trail to your right. Do not climb
Pyramid trail, your options are to either out-and-back the Scorpion trail or hike left to a dirt parking lot at the Upper Red Rock Loop/Chavez Rd intersection.
Scorpion will be used in the uphill direction as a connector trail with the Skywalker Trail or
Herkenham Trail. In the uphill direction, the Scorpion trail has short rocky sections.
