This track connects the Punakaiki River on the southern end with the mouth of the Fox River at the northern end and provides access to the heart of Paparoa National Park. You'll cross Pororari River, Bullock Creek, Fossil Creek, Dilemma Creek, and Fox River if you start at the southern end.

Most of the track is relatively flat with only few ups and downs. The Inland Pack Track was established in the 19th century during the gold rush to bypass some of the more dangerous coastal areas.

Noteworthy highlights on this track are the Ballroom Overhang, an overhanging limestone cliff next to the Fox River slightly off the track after 12 miles, and the Fox River Cave with impressive stalactites and stalagmites at the end of a short side track about 13.5 miles from the start right after fording Fox River.
