Family Friendly Fun, short hike for the whole family

Overview

Just 8 miles southeast of downtown Aspen, Weller Lake Trail (#1989) offers access to one of the area's most picturesque high mountain lakes.

Need to Know

A valid Colorado fishing license is needed to fish in Weller Lake.

Description

Park at the Weller Lake trailhead, cross the wooden bridge over the Roaring Fork River, and switchback your way up the gentle forested slope 0.5 miles to the serene shores of Weller Lake. Once at the lake, Mt. Shimer, at almost 12,500', stands broadly above you. The large open swath that runs from peak's summit down to the lake is a scar left by a massive snow avalanche that occurred in March 2019.
