Need to Know

DEC Parking Lot is located at N41 56.139, W74 19.692.

Description

The trail starts at the Kanape Brook parking area on Route 42. You'll hike left out of the parking lot, and soon cross the road turning right onto the red-blazed Ashokan High Point Trail.

Cross the bridge over the Kanape Brook. The trail is blazed with red discs. The first 2.7 miles of the trail follows an old woods road with a gradual incline along the scenic Kanape Brook. While you hike, you'll hear the brook and cross a few bridges. At the 2.7-mile point, turn left as the arrow shows. Now the trail is narrow.

After 200 feet, you'll see another trail junction. The trail to the left is longer but generally easier to climb. Right takes you up to the peak. Go right. This trail gains about 1,000 feet over a mile and there are several steep areas with stone steps. At 3.8 miles, you'll come to a viewpoint. The summit is another 400 feet further. Now you can descend the same way you came up or loop around.
