Description
Start at the Cumberland Knob Recreation Center where there are nice scenic overlooks, picnic areas, and a large field perfect for family gatherings. The trail showcases beautiful plants (in the spring of the year especially) and starts here on top of the mountain.
From the beginning, the trail winds down to Gully Creek on a moderately rough trail. There's no need to scramble or climb, but do watch for large roots and step-like features. Once at the bottom of the trail, you'll hike parallel to the river and over several crossings, none of which require getting too wet if at all. This part of the trail is where the magic is, as the river moves fairly rapidly and has several small waterfalls as it winds through large rocks and fallen trees.
There are multiple areas such as this along the trail, so don’t feel as though you must take it all in at the first one you come to. After moving away from the creek, the trail starts to ascend back up the mountain. After all, what goes down must come up. The climb up is both fairly steady and steep.
Flora & Fauna
Mountain laurel grows along the trail.
