Description
The South Mountain Trail begins at Forest Service Road #0073 at the Beaver Lake/Medicine Lake Trailhead and ends at Forest Service Road #0073. The best route to the trailhead is from Old La Sal Hwy UT46 to La Sal Pass Road. Access to the trail from the west is 4WD only.
The trail in its entirety is an out-and-back or you can take FR #0073 back to the east trailhead. The South Mountain Trail also provides access to
Pole Canyon Trail, Doe Canyon, and Pack Creek trails.
The terrain is mostly high mountain meadow singletrack with some rocky technical sections above the tree line (10,500+ ft).
Flora & Fauna
Wildflowers are abundant in summer and fall. The aspen groves are amazing. Mule deer, elk, and black bear are common in the area.
