An easy loop with lots of deer.
Need to Know
There are many more segments of trail around the park that are not a park of this loop and cross it. Be sure to have a trail map handy or use the
Hiking Project mobile app to be sure of where you are going.
Obviously it's in a state park, so passes are required. Day use only.
Description
The Davis Ponds Trail is a loop around the lower section of the Staunton State Park that follows the entrance road and parking lots. There is only 100 ft of elevation change, and it is great for an easy hike for one step more difficult than pavement. I was able to hike flat foot the whole time. The path is wide, crushed rock the entire way and even in the rain, there was zero mud.
There were TONS of deer along the trail. They seem to hang out all day, and I have seen them every time I go on this trail.
There is an excellent view of Lion's Head from between the two ponds.
Flora & Fauna
Mule deer, hawks, eagles, geese, black squirrels, and ground squirrels can be found here.
