The trail follows a side arm of the Rees River that leads to the southern part of the Glenorchy Lagoon. At 0.6 miles the dirt road ends and you hike alongside the fence of the Glenorchy Golf Course. The trail then turns north to reveal great views of the lagoon. Half a mile further, keep left and enter the lagoon over the boardwalk. There are a few benches left and right to the side of the main boardwalk that invite one to stay and observe the flora and fauna of the lagoon. Turn left at 1.3 miles to stay on the southern circuit. Cross the creek over the wooden bridge to return to the dirt road.

Native species include pied stilt/poaka, South Island pied oystercatcher/torea, Australasian bittern/matuku, New Zealand shoveller/kuruwhengu, grey teal/tete (in spring), grey duck/parera, and scaup/papango. The New Zealand falcon/karearea may be seen soaring above the wetland hunting for prey.
