This trail enters the Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness and the usual federal wilderness area regulations and restrictions apply here. Practice Leave No Trace (LNT) backcountry skills and ethics. Camp 100 feet from fragile areas; bury human waste at least 200 feet from water, trails, and campsites. This trail is usually closed by snow between November and May.

Description

This trail allows for a short (2.5 mile) but very steep connection between the Eagle Creek Trail #440 just above Wy'East Camp and a primitive campsite ("Camp Smokey") on the Pacific Crest Trail #2000 on the Benson Plateau.

The Forest Service suggests that this trail is for more experienced hikers due to the length and grade. Brush grows quickly in this area, so the trail may become difficult to follow at certain points. It is not a recommended tie between the PCT and Eagle Creek.

The arduous ascent or pounding descent is brightened somewhat by views of Mount Hood that can be had from open spots along the trail. At the bottom, this trail affords a unique side view of Wy'East Falls.
