From the ferry terminal at Okiato, this scenic walkway follows a well-marked and well-maintained track all the way to Orongo Bay and then on to the town of Russell. The track passes through a variety of terrain ranging from dense native bush, to wetland flats, to a pleasant boardwalk that winds along the edge of the water.

The walkway can be broken up into four stages that can either be done consecutively (for those looking for a longer hike) or individually (for hikers wanting a shorter outing). The Okiato to Russell Walkway can be joined with the Paihia to Opua Walkway for a nice day hike. Ferry services make it possible to connect the two walkways for a nice loop.
