The Lavilla Road trailhead has a large gravel parking lot and a pit toilet. It's also the easternmost point of the PK trail system.
A sidewalk leads to a nice gateway made of large cedar trees. Hikers will turn to the right or the left on the other side. Both directions will take you to the Redbird Trailhead, but the right is slightly easier.
At the next intersection, keep right unless you already want to double-back to the parking area. You'll soon cross an open area and get back into the tree cover on this wide and mellow section.
