NPS federal fee area (national monument).

Description

The trail gradually climbs up to the rim of a canyon. The trail continues along the ridge for a while and the views from here are stunning (probably the best in the entire national monument).

Before the area was a national monument, ranchers brought their cattle up here during the winter, which gave this area its name.

The trail is popular for birding and for wildflowers in spring. Bring lots of water in summer as the trail is very exposed, and there is little shade.

Once you reach Bull Pasture, you can either continue to Mt. Ajo (a long, difficult day hike) or make your way back via the same route or the Estes Canyon Trail.
