This area is in a floodplain, so avoid the trails during periods of high water. There is one other parking area along the Kancamagus Highway that is probably better to park at. When parking at the Saco, remember that the recommended parking limit (where signed) is 15 minutes, which is not enough time to complete this trail and return. I see people take their dogs here all the time, but I'm still awaiting confirmation that this is allowed.
Description
To get to the trails from the Saco Ranger Station, park at the north end of the parking lot, hike up the dirt road, and take a right on the dirt road past a gate to Ray Burton Field. A short ways into the field, there will be a kiosk to the left showing the trails for the Albany Town Forest.
Davis Farm Trail starts left for a short distance, then turns left again into a pine forest. It passes the
Railroad Wye Trail (on right) in 0.2 miles and the Crossover Trail in another 0.5 miles. In roughly another half mile, there is a small path on the left that continues to the Western
Access Trail. This path doesn't appear on the kiosk map, but I have talked to Upper Saco Valley Land Trust about adding it.
Take a right at the next junction towards the Swift River. The trail ends in the northwest corner of the trail system. From here, the
Swift River Trail starts and follows the river for almost 2 miles. This trail is narrow and winding with many little ups and downs, so it's a great one to use on your return journey.
Flora & Fauna
Eastern hemlock, wintergreen, beech, white pine, and maple grow along the trail.
