There's lots of private property in the area, so be careful if you take another route. Be sure to get permission from the owners.
Description
This is a local's route that differs from the one detailed in a newspaper article a few years ago (if you follow the route from the paper, you'll never make it as that way is closed due to private property now).
To get to the trailhead, go west of King Hill (the metropolis) to Dempsey Meadows Road going north. Once past the ranch and tilled ground, a tank trap road goes west. Follow that as far as you dare, then start hiking from there. There is no shade and no water, so prepare before you go.
We got off just before the very steep section of road just southwest of the crown and started uphill from there; we were not prepared to truly climb, as the newspaper never mentioned needing climbing gear or that it was a scramble up. But, being such a remote, difficult area, we made our way around the north side as far as we could get, looking over the devils bedroom section of the Dempsey Meadows Study Area, and came back down without topping it. This hike is definitely not for small children as it requires scrambling the entire way over sharp rocks and steep ravines.
