This trail is usually closed by snow between November and May.

NOTE: The Horse Camp Trail #958 was affected by the Miller Complex Fire that burned over it in the summer of 2017. The Forest Service and volunteers are doing what they can to stabilize and restore the trail but you should be vigilant for falling trees and rocks.

Description

From the Horse Camp Trailhead on Forest Road 1040, the trail climbs steeply for 0.8 miles to a junction with Butte Fork Trail #957. Stay left to continue on the Horse Camp Trail #958 which climbs steeply along the ridge through a number of short switchbacks before leveling off about 1.8 miles from the trailhead.

After this brief respite, the trail continues to climb somewhat less steep grades for another 1.5 miles to the bottom of a high mountain meadow that hosts fields of wildflowers in season. It is easy to lose the trail in this meadow. If you do, just continue up the canyon along the creek and soon you'll connect with the #958 near the Echo Lake junction at 6,592 feet.

Here a short trail goes right toward Echo Lake, while the main trail goes left and climbs up to the Pacific Crest Trail on the ridge, which is where the Horse Camp Trail #958 ends. The trail from the lake to the ridge crest may be faint in places and snow and ice may linger on it into early summer. Careful to stay on the path, and watch your footing.
