Description
Extending from Pruitt to Boxley, the Buffalo River Trail follows along the rugged country alongside the Buffalo River climbing the bluff lines, meandering up side canyons, and dropping into hollows. Hikers will enjoy views of the river along the way. The trail intersects with many other trails along it's length with the option to explore more scenic viewpoints and historic sites. The trail's difficulty varies from some wheelchair accessible terrain to many miles of steep ups and downs over rocky hillsides.
The middle portion of the trail passes through the Ponca Wilderness, connecting Steel Creek to Kyles Landing, which are popular campgrounds for hikers and floaters. This trail follows the scenic views Buffalo River and the overlooking cliffs. Several old homesteads and cabins can be found in this area. This is a dirt trail that is well traveled, but trekking poles are recommended due to loose rocks and roots.
For hikers looking for a shorter day hike, combining a section of the Buffalo River Trail with some of the other trails is a great option. For those looking for a longer overnight outing or extended backpacking trip, there are camping options along the trail. For more information on the Buffalo River Trail, download the
NPS Trail Guide.
