A few dispersed campsites can be found along Portland Mine Road, but be sure to follow all Uncompahgre National Forest camping regulations.
Description
Follow the Portland Trail for 2.2 miles, and from the four-way intersection, take the spur off to the right. Slowly losing ground, the route meets with Portland Creek after one-quarter mile. Growing faint, the trail dwindles at this point, but a small network of social and game trails work their way up to the Portland Mine Road (County Road 16), about 300 feet uphill. The mine sits at the very end of this road. Alternatively, you could simply hike, bike or drive up the 1.8 mile Portland Mine Road, although 4WD is required to reach this point by car.
Flora & Fauna
You're likely to spot the usual deer, mountain goat, wild turkeys, and squirrels. While uncommon, black bears and mountain lions aren’t unheard of.
