The road will be closed due to snow and ice during late fall through early spring. Call the Coronado National Forest, Sierra Vista Ranger District, at (520) 378-0311 for a status update.
Description
This Forest Service road stretches from Hwy 92 to the end of the Reef campsite. The first mile or so is paved, after that, the rest is dirt and suitable for two-wheel drive vehicles.
This probably isn't great for hiking since it is a road and open to cars, but it can be used if you like that sort of thing. It can also be used to connect
Perimeter Trail and
Clark Spring Trail #124 to make a larger loop hike.
There no guard rails and the switchbacks are narrow and steep. At the top, there are bathrooms and picnic benches. After climbing to 7,200 ft, you deserve a rest and nourishment. The views are spectacular, especially on the way down.
During the summer, carry a light wind breaker. It is significantly cooler at the top. For the other seasons, bring a heavier wind breaker, gloves, and ear warmers.
