This is an easy and well-marked trail with low traffic.
Check Mammoth Lakes Trails website for up-to-date information.
Description
The trailhead starts at Horseshoe Lake. This is also the starting point for Mammoth Pass Trail and McLeod Lake. The trail begins on a steady uphill trail for about 0.5 miles then it levels out with a mild downhill hike to the end.
The trail is well established through sometimes-dense trees in the Ansel Adams Wilderness for about two miles. It then opens up to the burnt area in Reds Meadow Valley where you can see
Devils Postpile across the way. Follow the trail where it ends at the Reds Meadow pack station.
It's a tranquil hike through the woods with lots of native flora and fauna.
You can hike back or take the shuttle ($7) to the ski lodge and then take another shuttle (free) back into town when you can. From town, you can then catch the Lake Mary Trolley (free) back to Horseshoe Lake.
Dogs are allowed on leash and can also ride the shuttles as long as they are muzzled.
Flora & Fauna
Chicken of the woods, wild berries.
