DuPont State Recreational Forest is a very popular multiuse, bi-directional trail system, so be on the lookout for hikers, horses, and bikers. It is normally open in any weather although it can close in extended periods of freeze / thaw during the winter.
Description
Burnt Mountain trail is a loop off of
Corn Mill Shoals trail. With the exception of two short sections, this trail would be rated an easy/moderate trail and is really one of the nicest trails in the Forest.
There are two schools of thought on the preferred route for this trail. One option is to take the leg farthest from
Cascade Lake Road first since this is a more gradual climb (actually pretty flat and descending for a good part of the way). You'll wind around the mountain eventually getting to the top of the last of several climbs and start back down.
Fairly soon you'll come to a steep section with loose rocks and roots heading back down to
Corn Mill Shoals Trail. The trail then gets easier for a little ways. Then things really get interesting! There is a section of armored trail around a hundred yards long.
The other option is to start with the tough climb and enjoy the long descent taking the loop counter-clockwise.
