Description
Swallow Rock Trail follows Swallow Rock Run up the west side of Allegheny Mountain and drops down the east side following an unnamed stream on its way to Seneca Creek. This is a steep, rocky trail as you get close to the summit. The trail crosses the
Allegheny Mtn Trail (TR532) and ends at the
Seneca Creek Trail (TR515).
This is a great trail if you are looking for a challenge. Going from Allegheny Mtn towards County Rd 29, you start off on a steep erosion influenced trail with lots of loose rock and occasional mud pits. About a mile in, the trail slackens out but the shale continues, as well as occasional mud challenges. The rest of the trail has a few shallow easy creek crossings and occasional rocky sections and other challenges.
At the very bottom with about 0.3 miles left in the trail you make a short climb after crossing a creek then descend down to the road. This last descent is the most challenging part of the trail being on a slope and shale covered. What tops off the challenge at the end is you are hiking on top of the famous Swallow Rock, so if you make a mistake you may fall.
