Before embarking on your hike stop by the Mountain Adventure Center in the village for trail updates and a backcountry hiking/biking map. This trail is multi-use, and you may encounter bikers or vehicle traffic.

Description

The trail heads out on the South Mountain near the general parking area. For access, use the service road above the Sawmill Village gate house. The trail heads on the left past the gate house, from there it meanders along the ridge line, it has several moderate elevation changes and east-facing views. The trail passes by the Sunrise Backcountry Hut which is a great place to take a break and enjoy the scenery. Beyond the Backcountry Hut, you'll find 6000 Steps and Bail Out trails that both head on the left and lead back to the Ballhooter Chairlift. The trail also accesses the 80' fire tower where 360-degree views await the adventurous.

Truly “back country” with mini trails off tower gravel road...hidden treasures like “hibernation” with lookout. Very icy during winter though. 4mi — 2h 00m
