This alpine trail is often closed out for the season by snow just as the Moab desert trails 6000-ft below start to cool off.

Description

If you take a commercial shuttle, you'll start this hike from Geyser Pass, as mapped. If you are shuttling yourself, you can start lower: at Oowah Lake, at the Geyser Pass parking area, at the pass, or further up the Burro Pass road, depending on your vehicle and energy level.

The route from Geyser Pass (named for an early settler, not an actual water spout) works upward to Burro Pass at about 11,150-ft. Along the way you'll hike jeep trails and singletrack, this is a steep trail though!

From the pass, the trail drops precipitously down through evergreen forest, sharp switchbacks, black dirt, igneous rocks and roots. This is a difficult, and rugged trail, in a way that is out of character with most of Moab. Eventually, you reach jeep road again and continue left, then up and down in aspen glades. If you are lucky, you'll be here in the fall when the trees are gold and luminous.

Watch for trail signs toward Warner Lake to show you the right way. Either rejoin the LaSal Mountain Loop Road, or Hazzard County trail to continue The Whole Enchilada.
