Description
The route starts at the Potato Patch Mountain junction with
Potato Patch Road (FS 68). From there, it heads east following one of the main ridges in the Cohutta Mountains. Most of the route is heavily forested, but don't miss the Mountaintown Creek Overlook.
A few miles beyond the Mountaintown Creek Overlook, you'll reach the trailhead for the
Mountaintown Creek Trail, which offers an awesome descent back to Gates Chapel.
Shortly after the junction with
Mountaintown Creek Trail, you'll start a one-mile, 500-foot descent down to the South Fork Jack's River. There is a small campground (Jack's River Fields) and the
South Fork Trail also leaves from here.
FS 64 then climbs north for about four miles until an intersection with a number of other forest roads near the northern terminus of
South Fork Trail.
For some reason, Google and many other maps have this forest road identified as Georgia Highway 2, but it is decidedly non highway-like.
