Description
To reach the Catwalk Trail from the Mill Creek Nature Park parking area in Narrows, you must either ascend the
Waterfalls Trail or
Butternut Trail. If ascending the
Butternut Trail, you'll come to a junction with the Catwalk Trail after approximately 0.8 miles.
The northern section of the Catwalk Trail will be a welcome well-graded mellow descent after the steep ascent of
Butternut Trail. The Catwalk Trail descends to a junction with the Waterfall Trail on the right or continuing up the Catwalk Trail to the left (south).
The Catwalk Trail changes its character dramatically and the gradient gets steep and has multiple rock gardens to pick your way through. There are two waterfalls along Mill Creek where you can take steep spur trails down to along the southern portion of the Catwalk Trail. The Catwalk Trail ends after a steep ascent up to a junction with the
Butternut Trail to the left (east) (you can take this to form a loop back to the parking area) and the
Piney Road Trail to the right (west).
Be sure to dress in bright colors during hunting season (generally fall and winter). The town of Narrows and nearby Pearisburg both have many trails and are investing in outdoor recreation. Stop in at local restaurants and stores to support these small towns so they continue to encourage outdoor recreation!
