Mountain Home Trail is the now decommissioned, one lane road that once led up to Angelus Oaks. It's been closed to vehicles for half a century, and we are now left with a singletrack trail that gives us a view of mother nature taking things back.

The hike starts at the Loch Leven Conference Center near Mountain Home Village along Highway 38, just before the Forrest Falls turnoff. There is a parking lot available to just before the gate. On foot, pass the gate and continue along the un-maintained road for about 3/4 of a mile and you'll pass a second gate. The dirt will begin here and you'll stay on this same trail until you make it up to Angelus Oaks. You'll find a gate at the top which leads you onto a residential street. You can follow this road into town, where you can link up with the Santa Ana River Trail.

Along the trail, you'll encounter a creek crossing, a waterfall and fantastic views. The flora changes from chaparral, to oak forest, to pine forest along the way. The trail is a singletrack, and consists of decomposing asphalt, and dirt. At times, you'll feel as if you are on a paved path. Other times you'll not have a clue there was ever a road there. The grade is easy to moderate, but consistent. Once in Angelus Oaks, you'll have access to the Santa Ana River Trail network and your hike can go in many directions. Or you can just turn around and come down the way you came and enjoy the long descent.

This is a two-way, multi-use trail and experiences high usage on the weekends. Always be alert for other trail users while ascending and descending the trail.
